Why do charismatic leaders have such great sway over how some people think and behave? Professor Jochen Menges studies the social dynamics between leaders and followers, and thinks this has to do with the positive emotions that such leaders inspire in people and a phenomenon he calls "the awestruck effect." In his stirring talk, Menges explains how the awestruck effect can lead to the inability to understand and scrutinize the messages of our leaders, and how this can be problematic when making decisions about who we trust to take charge.
